Leung Ka Fai Felt More Pressure Facing Beijing Audiences

The high-profile Hong Kong stage drama "Love in a Fallen City" has finally met with Beijing media on Monday, two days earlier than its Beijing debut.

Having just wrapped up their tour in North America, the team, including Golden Horse award-winner Leung Ka Fai, director Fredric Mao, lead actress Louisa So and other main roles talked about the play at the press conference.

Since the Hong Kong start of its tour, the play has been widely acclaimed by audiences and critics.

Fredric Mao, also the artistic director of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome.

"After all, the play is in Cantonese. As a project of cultural exchange with Mandarin-speaking audiences, we felt greatly encouraged that the play was well received."

Though the play has been staged nearly one hundred times all over the world, both the director and actor felt much pressure for the Beijing stop.

"Compared with the performance in Shanghai, I felt more nervous here in Beijing, because Shanghai audiences are generally more familiar with Eileen Cheung's work. Beijing audiences have higher expectations for stage drama. Besides, the play is in Cantonese."

Veteran actor Leung Ka Fai's performance in films could not be questioned, for he was just given the Golden Horse award for Best Actor earlier this year, however, the actor is not as confident with his stage performance.

When asked about his cooperation with actors and actress from Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Leung joked that they must have tolerated a lot on stage with his awkward performance.

"For them, I am just a newcomer. They are experienced stage actors; no matter how old any of them might be. It could not be an easy task for them to tolerate."

The play will staged at the Capital Theater in Beijing from the 17th to 21st of May, as an important event of the "Meet in Beijing" Festival.

"Love in a Fallen City," is based on the late Shanghai author Eileen Cheung's novel of the same title. It is a story set in Hong Kong in the early 1940s, about a relationship between a divorced woman in Shanghai and her beau who has returned from overseas.
